As I understand it, that was a series of articles and activities from a

New York Times journalist, not a proposal for an education program. I understand that it came under criticism for inaccuracies. That's fine. However, I don't think we typically get a full story of the United States and for that matter the society that was here in North America that preceded it. A lot of our history curricula is based on myths and a whitewash of the more difficult topics like slavery, the role of women, the genocide of the Indians, the labor movement, and for that matter, the struggles within the various colonies over indentured servitude, the rights to vote and own property, and the structure of the plantation system.

I've been more curious about it myself. After all there were Europeans living here for over 200 years before the founding of the United States. I knew a lot about the founders and the Revolution and US history per se, at least from the point of view of the people empowered to write history. But the rest was kind of a mystery to me, so I've been reading books about that recently which offer a different perspective. Right now I'm reading "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn, which of course has it's criticisms as well.

So, the 1619 project? Just a hot button topic for conservatives that I only know a little bit about. History of people living on North America generally and the US in particular? I learn more and more all the time and lot of it isn't flattering. However, some of it is. What is clear is that freedom however you conceptualize it, is a constant struggle and an imperfect work in progress.
