Is it really possible for them to do so, so much better though? It seems

like all of those candidates have been wholesale rejected by their voter base, save a few untouchables like Mitt Romney.

This is what the Republican Party is now, sadly enough. It is the white grievance party and the home for bigots, misogynists, anti-intellectuals, religious fanatics, and gun nuts. That's the only tent their party has, and who is in it. I don't see any other path forward for them, either.
