Having said that, the institution of the monarchy seems like such an anachronism in the 21st Century.

At one point, maybe many centuries ago, it was an organizing mechanism for evolving societies that made sense. For at least the last 500 years the various monarchies of Europe have done much more harm than good, with all of the internecine dramas and power grabs, distorted by religion and nationalism, responsible for wars, purges, and colonialism.

Now the monarchy just seems like an inherited job with perks but little or no purpose.
