My theory - never, ever sell into a dislocation. If you are

Prescient enough to sell or hedge before a rout begins, good for you, well done. If not, which is generally true for those of us without crystal balls, don’t start remaking the bed when the shit is hitting the fan - it just gets all over your sheets.

I think it’s a good rule of thumb - if you are going to do anything at all in the midst of a rout, be a buyer. It takes a bit of a leap of faith that the market will trend up over time, albeit with lots of volatility, but I think that’s a safe leap. If it’s wrong, we’re screwed in ways far beyond our investment valuations.

This obviously applies to the market as a whole - individual securities should be judged on their own merits, and sometimes, cutting losses makes sense. But going to cash in the midst of a rout - not a good idea IMO.
