They are both Sunni
There are religious interpretive differences, I'm sure. Mostly it's an ethnic difference. ISIS is Arabic, while the Taliban are Afghan/Pakistani
Mostly I think it's about objectives. The Taliban are a pretty local group. They don't really care a whole lot about what happens outside their corner of the world. The screwed up, significantly, by providing a place for Bin Laden to hang out and that's why we went there. Whereas ISIS wants a Global Caliphate and is far more likely to cause trouble even if left alone.
If the Taliban is smart, they'll reject common cause with other Islamic Fundamentalists and not give us any excuse to invade again.
