Friend can work for us, not ISIS K. Taliban wants us out, but they know they need international support and recognition to actually govern Afghanistan as a stand alone country. ISIS K wants Afghanistan to be a part of a broader ISIS led caliphate. Thus ISIS wants to destabilize the Taliban, and of course attack us and anyone else who doesn’t think like them at any opportunity.

The sooner we can complete our mission, the sooner we get out. In that sense, the Taliban’s immediate goals are aligned with ours, not ISIS K’s.

I linked an article in today’s WSJ if you are interested. I do think there is an oppty here for us, but a really risky one. For instance, who knows how much of a mind of their own wandering bands of Taliban fighters may have? That could complicate any efforts to cooperate with them as we try to get our people out and leave the country altogether.
