I suspect one reason is that under covid rules, it's arguably easier for a patient to make contact with the provider than before. Prior to covid, the visit had to be face-to-face in an office or a video call, where the patient came to an provider office for a video appointment. Under covid rules, the patient can call in and request a phone visit. The provider gets a list of people to be called for a phone visit. That way, the office and the provider are not dealing with no-shows. So the provider calls the patient, discusses their situation and how they are doing, and either updates a script or makes a change in the patient's meds.
