...need to sell ads, meaning they need to attract viewers. You don't do that with boring, well-balanced news stories -- you sensationalize it in such a way as to attract and retain the audience you want for your customers, the advertisers. It's infotainment. There is a difference between the "straight" news stories and the commentary on these channels (e.g., Sean Hannity does not claim to be a news reporter), but all of it is designed to sell ads at the end of the day. Their treatment of Trump was a great example of this, but nothing tops the wall-to-wall COVID fear porn that we saw for more than a year.
