Chicago was facing a pandemic-induced $1.2 billion budget shortfall at the time she proposed the reduction, which was actually $80 million, not $60 million. Cuts were being made in other city departments as well. Of the $80 million, about $34 million was from “cuts” in already vacant CPD positions. The rest was to be offset by grant funding or reallocated to the city’s Office of Public Safety Administration to fund clerical jobs once held by cops. Lightfoot has consistently stated her opposition to the “defund the police” movement. So this is a money problem, not a policy problem. Unfortunately though she can’t print money. Feel free to ignorantly misrepresent the situation in search of owning the libs, though.
