...a more fundamental one, IMO, of public education. There are obvious merits to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have an education, but the downside of that is government involvement.

First, you have the problem of the government not being able to run a lemonade stand, much less an education system, which is why so many of our schools suck. But let's leave that for another day.

Second, you have the problem of determining what gets taught. For most of our history, this wasn't too much of an issue because everyone was pretty much on board with the greatness of America, patriotism, reality, etc. As the left has moved further and further away from those core beliefs into divisive racialism and Marxism, that trend has naturally infected curriculum, too, as leftists dominate school boards and school bureacracies around the country.

So, if you are going to say that the government has the right to control schools and, by extension, curriculum, then you are going to have a battle over what curriculum gets taught. It's unfortunate that governors and others have had to issue these guidelines, but it is in response to outrageous preexisting counter-proposals from the Marxist left. The teaching of our children is one of the most important things we do in terms of setting the stage for the future of the country. It's going to be a battle line.
