A very specific crisis which caused life expectancy in this country to decline by almost 2 years in the space of about 12 mths. It is burdening businesses with labor shortages that challenge their ability to cope. So, there really is no analogy to those other things you mentioned, which don’t present those kinds of immediate threats to their businesses (eating Big Macs all the time will lead to health problems, but not massive absences all at once as we’ve seen with Covid).

So yeah, I see differences. Personally, I would not object to a state policy saying that a dismissal simply due to refusal to abide by a dress code is deemed a resignation, not a firing, but I do agree that the challenge presented by that - many absences all at once - is extremely unlikely to rise to current levels.

Thus a state trying achieve a return to normalcy, an easing of supply chain problems, and then hopefully an easing of inflationary pressures, has a strong case IMO for making this exception. It’s an exceptional circumstance.
