I wasn’t really disagreeing with you. All I’m saying is that not all
Pushback to the bill is racist. There are real concerns.
My understanding is federal voting laws already on the books allow for redress against states where racial inequities exist, such as unequal ratios of voters to polling places in different locales. I think partisan takeovers of future election certifications can be challenged in court now, as such laws are passed. As can inequities in placement of polling stations and drop boxes.
I don’t oppose the bill. I would gain new respect for Manchin and Sinema if they supported reforming the filibuster to make it a debate extender rather than ender, which it is now.
I also don’t believe the new voting laws in Georgia make it any more difficult to vote than it is in NY. NY should not be the minimum standard, but nobody thinks it engages in Jim Crow. So, in terms of the article that launched this thread, the problem is that nobody is really debating this rationally. Jones’s comments just lead to heels digging in. It might be good for his re-election chances, but it won’t move the voting rights bills any closer to enactment.
