Later on, the 1920's, my great uncle served in the US Navy on Yangtze
River patrol. We used to tease him that he was like Steve McQueen in the Sand Pebbles, but he thought that movie was pretty accurate and it was one of his favorites. He was in the Navy for 38 years, retired as a Chief, and was an outspoken opponent of our interventions in Korea and Vietnam. His two sons were conscientious objectors.
His views were most definitely influenced by what he considered to be unjust intervention in China based on his experiences there. He was pretty damned remarkable.
