NARA retrieved the 15 boxes in January. They found confidential material in the 15 boxes. That pushed them to negotiate with Trump's lawyers for months .. as Trump's lawyers promised to give back more material if found?
Sources allegedly told NARA or FBI that Trump still had confidential materials. The DOJ either issued the subpoena in June (?) either before or after they asked MAL for their surveillance tapes. On 8/5, they asked for a search warrant. Someone told the DOJ in July or early August. It must have spooked them.
This is the estimated timeline from what I know.
