“us” vs “them” - tale as old as time.
When we view the would through a zero sum lens, it’s always “us” vs “them.” If “they” have more, get more, make more, improve, “we” must be losing out, it must be at “our” expense.
The “us” and the “them” shifts and changes, but if one views the world with that zero sum mindset it always rears its ugly head. It’s what undergirds ugly populism, the extreme identitarian mentality of so many and our super productive environment of grievance politics.
Instead of a view of the abundance of the world and our current moment of history we live in, we too often shrink it all, believe there is only and will always only be one piece of bread to share, so anyone who gets “more” must be taking it from me. And so, someone who believes her work is to lift up people who are oppressed wants to put her foot on the neck of someone else, because if that “other” improves his lot in life, then her “us” must become worse off.
