They took out air defenses in Syria and fired mostly dummy munitions (as in missiles with no explosives) at Iran. They clearly communicated "we can hit you much easier than you can hit us" without causing any real damage and also allowing Iran to save face, claim victory and have an off ramp because nobody woke up to burning buildings or rubble this morning.

It was the absolute perfect response IMO which should de-escalate and deter Iran.
