This seems to be an odd event to pick to justify more relaxed gun laws.

A single gunman who wants to assassinate a police officer, especially armed w/ automatic weapon, will have good chance of success no matter what the gun law is. A more relaxed gun law would probably just provide these deranged individuals easier access to firearms. Sadly in US, someone shooting and killing a police officer might not even make it to national news.

Also, with US's more relaxed gun law compare to France, how many terrorist attacks in US have been prevented or reduced in US by armed citizens? Off the top of my head, the only one I can think of is the one where someone try to shoot his way into a Texas gun show and was killed by armed security officer.
