historians who take that route that I know of. Nor does he know of any.

I guess he could appeal to Thoreau, whose essays I like, but hell, Thoreau could write easily from his mama's cabin.
The best examples of conscience (not exactly natural law although, imo, it has nexus) probably came from the anti-slavery movement, who saw a greater duty to follow God in the pursuit of justice for all his peoples, and had many folks who broke the laws for conscience sake.
While there were a few of those (I'm looking at you John Brown) who advocated violence---John might have like a canon to shoot, most were radical pacifists.
