A "coma" is generally regarded as a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3 to 8


From the information provided, he appeared to be a GCS6. It's essentially a state of unresponsiveness. It didn't seem he was entirely unresponsive, but he certainly lacked any meaningful responsiveness.

I agree with the family's decision, and would have chosen the same. Autopsy almost certainly would add no benefit.
