Not to start a whole nother thing about all things slavery, but............

what became the peculiar institution in the Western Hemisphere was started by Columbus's benefactors, the Spanish monarchy.

In view of that and other bad results of 15th Century colonialism, I agree the holiday should be removed and replaced with a national holiday on November's first Tuesday, called Democracy Day.
