Politics in the deep south are pretty simple: if you're a white

Christian about a 99% chance you are a card-carrying Republican. You are probably at least a little (and most likely quite a bit) racist. It is in the DNA down there and very much still part of mainstream culture, even socially acceptable to be open about it. What integration there is is forced and it's still very much black vs. white divide.

If you're not white, almost certain you're a Democrat. If you're not Christian you are too, but good chance you don't find much in common with people and just live some place else.

Thus, you have party breakdowns along racial lines, and deep racial divisions, even in 2017. Sorry, but it really is that simple, at least in states like Mississippi and Alabama. It's no secret that Mississippi's breakdown of R vs. D is within a percentage of white vs. black.

One thing's for sure -- it sure as heck has nothing to do with economic policy.
