I just had a rather scary issue with a side effect to a severe URI treatment. It was my 83 year old dad, hospitalized suddenly with what they were calling pneumonia, which I think is the general term for terrible URI. When his white count finally started to improve, they warned us of a known intestinal side effect of all the antibiotics, called c-difficile. It is a severe case of the runs, and the smell, which is beyond brutal, is how you tell that you've got it.

Well, 5 weeks after he got out of the hospital, I had taken him on a trip to France for 15 days, and 3 days into the trip he gets hit with this problem (he is a doc which helps him recognize it, but the smell frankly makes it a can't miss). It is very treatable with a very specific antibiotic, but you have to treat it quickly particularly for an old dude - dehydration can set in almost immediately.

It was fun figuring out how to get that antibiotic in France, especially with a stubborn dad who decided he needed no help, being an American doc and all. He needed lots of help including a couple of trips to hospital pharmacies, but we managed.

Sith, if you get the trots and stink up your entire house in the process, call your doc immediately.
