That's what happens in countries with no government or corrupt government
and no regulations; aka in the parlance of the GOP, "freedom." Also, I'm sorry, but I can understand what military guys in a freaking war zone or disaster area call it. I'm sure there are plenty of unprintable euphemisms both printable and unprintable and perhaps even justified from a certain perspective. (Interestingly, my naval veteran father never referred to war-torn Japan or the Philippines that way, nor in later years the Middle Eastern countries he worked in the private sector.) What you don't want is the President of the United States making these kinds of statements about other sovereign nations or, by obvious implication, races. I think he has a different responsibility, don't you?
While we're at it, I can't imagine why some of those folks would want to get out, can you? I was talking about this with my wife the other day. My family came from Scotland sometime prior to the Revolution for more political freedom and for economic opportunity. My mom's family came from Germany looking for religious liberty. A good friend of mine is from a family who fled political persecution in China in the 1940's. Yet another from Sicily during the great wave of Italian migration in the 1880's. Another from the Ortega government in Nicaragua. My wife's uncle came here to avoid Pancho Villa in Mexico. Every person in America has similar stories. That's kind of the point isn't it of this whole American experience?
I don't know about you but growing up I was taught the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
It didn't add, "unless you're from a shithole country." Some of us, let by this President, seem to think these ideals are now trite or cornball. Other countries no longer appear to merit our compassion even when it involves our own best interests unrelated to immigration, evidenced by our cuts to foreign aid. Instead they are just other places to hold in contempt or to exploit or to bomb or invade as we see fit.
