I don't understand how this would a scandal

I am talking about the FISA warrant being based off of the Steele Dossier. I just don't understand how that in itself is a scandal.

First of all, the "bogus dossier" is a great marketing tool for Republicans. It has not been proven to be bogus. Parts of it have been confirmed to be true, and other parts are probably not able to be confirmed (the bed pissing). Republicans are great at repeating a line and making it a meme. That is what is happening here.

Furthermore even if the dossier is factually wrong, that doesn't make the FISA warrant improper. Information contained in warrant applications are wrong all the time. That is why warrant applications are at the beginning of the investigative process and not the end. Information in these warrant applications do not have to be proven to be true beyond a reasonable doubt. The system would not work that way. Rather there only needs to be a good faith basis that the information was true.

I know that conservatives will say that this was a "DNC commissioned report" and thus inherently untrustworthy because the DNC was biased. Even assuming the government knew the DNC commissioned the report AND that the DNC pushed for this report to be turned over, this doesn't mean it is inherently untrustworthy.

Here is an analogy. A wife thinks her husband is cheating on her and wants to catch him. She hires a private detective to do some snooping. That detective finds the husband is actually involved in a child pornography ring. He turns the information he has gathered into the police. The police get a warrant based off that information. Just because the wife was biased against the husband does not make the report invalid and an improper basis for a warrant. Furthermore, the wife's bias does not mean that all investigation of the husband by the police should stop.

The only way this is a scandal (even accepting all of the conservative assumptions which are big leaps) is if the Obama administration acted in bad faith (ie. they knew the dossier was fake and proceeded anyways with it).

Am I missing something here?
