Thanks to all for the advice ... she's currently hourly with the goal that


it was to turn into a salaried position once she was capable of doing it unsupported by us, so she's not expecting to be paid for the trip time, luckily. Would be much more sticky if it were a PTO situation, though we'd probably just pay it since it's 10 days to make it go away.

I want to do it before so she'll have time to line up interviews etc and miss as little paid time as possible life wise, but also don't want to be a wet blanket on the trip. I didn't think of the issue of potential expenditures on the trip itself, but that's a good one.

It will not really be a surprise. The last week in particular we've just not been able to see eye to eye on much and she's becoming increasingly rude as well. That's why I wanted to pick the most "sensitive" time, as I don't want to be accused of ruining her trip maliciously.
