I think you are attacking the wrong problem.

guns have always been around. Mass shootings are growing. Why?The weapons people can get today are the same they could get 30 years ago.
Why are we not finding the source of the issues and instead going straight to the tool?

How many school shootings happened prior to the "It takes a village" mentality? Prior to the weakening of the strong family unit? Prior to the mass media coverage and almost glorification of school shooters? How many of these shooters emerge as coming from broken family units. Why can't we talk about that?

We'll go down the road to ban the "assault rifles" and the underlying issues still exist.
Then, when a kid uses hand guns, we'll ban those, and the underlying issues still exist.
Then, when a kid uses a shotgun, we'll ban those, and the underlying issues still exist.

But strangely enough, i agree with you. Ban it all. Cut straight to where we're going anyway and save all the rabble rousing and hopefully force us to deal with the real issues. I'll just keep my weapons illegally since the real monsters out there think that I am unarmed. And when the violence emerges in another creative way when a kid figures out how to create a bomb with fertilizer, then we'll glorify that with mass media coverage and find something else to ban. And continue to ignore the real problem. And then when 3 insane/bullied kids get together and go on a knife spree, we'll cover that and ignore the real problem.

But i'm with you. Freaking ban it all. I obviously don't want a sicko to storm my daughters daycare trying to outdo another "high score" that every media members posts up on the scoreboard.
