she's a political operative. both parties need them, but not many like them (think "hot tub" Tom Delay).

She's from a political family in Baltimore, she's the type of person that will spend a career managing chits. She likes to grandstand (her response to Hank Paulson's initial initial proposal to address the burgeoning financial disaster a few years ago was cringe worthy...). I personally think she's a little light on substance, doesn't shy away from the platitude.. She also had no problems participating in the Visa IPO, while she was working on legislation directly related to the credit card industry... To me, that puts her into a bucket of sleazy Congressmen and women that, for some reason, don't think insider trading laws apply to them (or that believe the American people should trust them, even as they say they shouldn't trust others...).

that said, she's been widely credited with maintaining some discipline within the party over the years and does well on the fundraising trail. i think people could reasonably question her leadership more recently though.
