Trump will be the gift that keeps on giving for the Dems until he's out.
That may be next year, that may be 2021. I very much doubt it will be any time past 2021.
Then comes the questions of (a) how much damage has been done to the country and what can be done to clean it up, and (b) how much damage has been done to the GOP and where does it go from there?
The Dems will almost certainly continue to be a dysfunctional mess of a party that people generally like better than the alternative....but the GOP is likely to have some major soul searching to do. Do they want to revert to a stale, unpersuasive Ayn Randian narrative about "job creators" and free markets that wins them a boatload of corporate money in every election? Do they want to go all in on white trashionalism (hope not)? Do they want to continue to play the culture war game and be the party of aging, white, rural/smalltown America? Hard to see that working for them longterm.
And what of the Dems? Do they go full on Continental socialist, or continue to toe the line as a party that quietly sucks up to Wall Street while it touts a populist message and constantly brings a knife to a gunfight?
All things we will see. I hope there are changes to both parties that don't lead us down the road of a nativist party vs. a socialist party, that's for sure. Those are two pretty awful alternatives (although if that's the case, color me a socialist).
