have a problem with women like Hillary, Elizabeth Warren, etc. I don't think it's because their husbands tell them to, but more because they have an "old school" view of a woman's role in society that they themselves (and the women around them) have adhered to throughout their own lives, which is more or less predicated on living in a patriarchal society. A woman's "place" is to run the family, raise the kids, keep her husband happy, etc. Maybe even to play the role of Lady MacBeth behind the scenes if her husband is influential, or to have a career or interest if there is time for it (with all of those other priorities always coming in first). I have seen this with the women in my own family, particularly those from the South. It's a privilege to not have to work, to be able to stay home with the kids, or to volunteer at the library and spend days shopping, preparing meals, etc. It's not because they're bad or their husbands beat them into submission, but more just because that's how their world is. I think in many ways many of these women are either uncomfortable or directly threatened by "alpha females" who want jobs like president, CEO, etc. And really don't like them accordingly.

In essence, it's cultural and someone like Hillary is viewed as thumbing her nose up or scoffing at their "subservient housewife" role (or in some cases does -- I recall there being some comments about Romney's wife "just being a stay at home mom" etc.). I suspect there is a great bit of jealously at play, at least in the subconscious as well, among women who have accepted their role as mom, wife, housekeeper. etc. (and rather than being inspired, have a negative reaction).

Anecdotally, I can tell you in the legal profession men and women alike are the first to criticize an aggressive, assertive female attorney and accuse her of being a duplicitous, back-stabbing "bitch" for behaving exactly the same way most of her male colleagues (who are viewed as strong leaders, go-getters, and rainmakers) behave. It's just part of our DNA and that goes all the way to Wall Street and K Street, not just trailer parks and tent revivals in Alabama.
