I taught in Sharpsburg, GA from 1997-1999. We had separate HC queens...

There was a white HC queen and a black HC queen. The last year, there was an asian girl running for HC court, and they had to add a third column to the voting ballot (white, black, other).

It boggled the mind then, still does now.

Two queens

To ensure parity in homecoming queens, a plan was discussed for Newnan High to have white and black queens and homecoming court members.

But, according to Welch, students at Newnan High told the principal they didn’t need that plan.

“It was dropped because of the public and the student bodies thinking it was weird,” he said.

The plan would return two years later, and dual homecoming queens remained a tradition at Newnan High and East Coweta High until 1999, when both schools began electing a single queen.
