Therein lies the issue though...
"There are a lot of people who feel strongly that the civil war and defenders of slavery should not be publicly honored."
Why do they automatically conclude that those who participated in the Civil War were defending slavery? I'm not trying to get into a debate with you over something that has been hashed out ad nauseam on this board and other outlets, but there are many things that led to the tipping point of the Civil War and many reasons for which people participated.
My family was split on the matter and I had ancestors who fought on both sides right here within Virginia. They did not own slaves, nor did they care much for slavery. Some joined the Confederacy to help protect their homeland, their farms, and their livelihoods because of the fear the government was trying to take that away from them...first through excessive taxes and secondly through federal government "land grabs." Those that fought for the Union did so because of conscription and felt a duty to fight for their country.
Neither side of the family took slavery into consideration nor did it even cross their mind as something they would be associated with based on which uniform they put on. So to discredit their memory as supporters of slavery it seems a bit harsh and inaccurate, don't you think?
