Perhaps in this case, Shen didn't link the story. I was somewhat shocked

to see there were around 60K opiate related deaths last year (and that doesn't include coke and many other hard drugs), but we're having marches, calls for legislation, and constant discussion about "doing something" for the 8-12K gun murders over the same time (most of which involved folks that "were in charge of their life and made decisions that got them killed"). Not that I didn't realize this was a hugh problem, just that I had never related the numbers between the two, nor realized opiate related deaths were 5-6 times greater than gun deaths that weren't self-inflicted. You certainly wouldn't know that from the coverage or calls for legislation.

But even ignoring how many of those 60K were a result of starting off on pain killers for injury and then getting hooked, what exactly is CCav (and possibly you) suggesting we do about those that end up hooked due solely to poor choices? Say to hell with those "weak willed dopers who take this shit like candy" (even though you or I might be able to do the exact same thing and not get hooked), let them die, they deserve it? And again I ask, do you feel the same way about alcoholics, or other types of addicts? Or are some types of addicts less weak willed dopers and thus OK?
