To really do this, it means basically giving the whole country concealed carry licenses. Or maybe we'll all just walk around with gun belts, like in American Old West mythology. Kind of like Trump's suggestion that we arm our youth and send them clubbing to prevent the Orlando shooting.

So maybe if this good samaritan had a gun, only, say, two people would have died. Or maybe 10 would have died in a wild shootout between two untrained individuals. But let's say it would have saved two lives this time.

At what cost? If everybody has a handgun in anticipation of that one chance to play hero, how many more road rage issues would turn lethal? How many disputes of all kinds turn deadly? Will shoppers start risking getting shot for bringing 20 items to the express line (I get aggravated by that)? If we think just giving people loaded guns and sending them on their way is the answer to mass shootings, what does that say about the value of police training in our society? Why bother?

Well, for starters, I guess odds go up significantly that every car pulled over for speeding contains a gun. So maybe our cops will need much more training.
