Trump's OVERALL margin among white voters was roughly the same as Romney's, when you break it down by education level, there was a fairly big swing. The margin among white college educated voters was 10 points lower for Trump than for Romney, and the margin among white non-College educated voters was 14 points higher for Trump than for Romney. I don't think it's a stretch to say that non-college educated voters are FAR more likely to be middle class.

I get your aversion to the Trump narrative, but I think you're far too quick to dismiss what appears to me to be a fairly pronounced shift among white middle class voters in 2016. I think by looking just a race, you're missing the shift that took place underneath the aggregate margins. Traditional white republican voters -- like myself -- shifted to Hillary (which you see in the Trump's 10 point lower margin among white college educated voters), and traditional white democrat voters -- blue collar in the midwest -- shifted to Trump (which you can see in Trump's 14 point higher margin among white non-college educated voters)
