This is a toughie. A person certainly has the right to defend themselves
I don't think the law would justify deadly force if someone just poked a finger at you during an argument. Similarly, the law almost certainly would justify deadly force if someone grabbed a tire iron and was threatening you with it.
But this case falls in between the two. Shooter was clearly assaulted and had a right to defend himself. But was he justified in fearing for his life given the situation? Tough call.
Doesn't help that the shooter was the instigator in the first place. But according to the law, I'm not sure if that is relevant. The victim is the one who escalated the confrontation from verbal to physical
