Egg-zactly.

We live in this all or nothing kind of world. How about a little discussion now and then? Would it have killed these offended folks to go talk to a guy they had such a long history with? Get his side? Even disagree, and yet still continue to live with each other?

We're all about obliterating the "other side", no matter how many "other sides" there happen to be. And to be honest, while I think this is a problem all over the spectrum, it is most intense on the left these days IMO.

Quick edit: That's debatable. Trumpies obliterate all non-conformist repubs too.
