Immigration- who's closer to the majority of American's, Trump or Dem
candidates? It's somewhere in between, but how does that play out given the nature of primaries and the electoral college?
Thought it was kind of interesting-
- 72% thought immigration should be kept at the current level or reduced
- 76% think immigration is a good thing
- Most don't buy that immigrants hurt the economy
- 54% "worry" at least a fair amount about illegal immigration
- 77% think illegal immigration is a critical or important threat to the US
- 60% oppose "The Wall"
- Majority are good with DACA, path to citizenship
- 50% wants to ban sanctuary cities
My interpretation is the American public basically wants to:
- secure the border to stop illegal immigration
- doesn't like the ideological symbolism of the wall
- is ok w/ some path to citizenship for who's here (DACA, no mass deportations)
- is very pro legal immigration, and wants to keep it at current levels
That all seems reasonable. I don't know why this issue has lingered for so long, but now it's Trumpism vs. open borders w/ health care provided culture war.
