going to bail out the auto industry, because nobody had the stomach to test the full lassez-faire theory of letting everything crash and then spring forward from there. Although there was some disagreement about how to structure it.

I don't see much partisan rankling over farm bailouts either. But let's be clear - the need for them is the trade war that Trump recklessly started. By recklessly, I mean he started it with no understanding whatsoever of the downside and the risks, which of course means there was no risk-reward analysis. But unfortunately, my once free-market-devoted republican safe haven went all populist nationalist on me and became big-chief-socialist-trade-interventionist, so he actually has plenty of dem allies in this, and repub automatons who no longer possess the balls to take on Trump on principle, and thus, there is a fair amount of bipartisan support for the trade war itself, and certainly the farm bailouts.

But make no mistake - Trump is the cause of the farm bailouts. A massive financial collapse not caused by politics caused the auto bailout.
