If the chances of that outcome were unknowable, I think businesses would take even more drastic action - uncertainty scares business more than anything.

Yet here we sit, worrying about "ceding something to China" - personally, I think the future rests in alternative, non-fossil fuels, whether that becomes a necessity in the next 10 to 30 years or the next 200 years (fossil fuel sources are vast but finite). So just as we made it a priority to be self-sufficient in fossil fuels, that should be the answer to over-reliance on China in the future. Develop supplies (like rare earth) and capabilities domestically.
