We already were. We've been in a proxy war with Iran in Iraq
And Yemen for years. Against ISIS, we are basically on the same side with Iran against a common enemy, so it's a very layered, complicated situation. I just saw a news ticker claiming the US announced a pause against ISIS in order to prepare for retaliation by Iran and its proxies. That could be very significant if this whole affair causes both the US and Iran to take their feet off ISIS's throat.
One wonders if the Trump Admin has any policy to deal with all these contingencies or just acts, waits, and reacts. That's worrying in such an explosive situation. But we didn't just start this kind of war against Iran - it's been going on for years. We did escalate it, and I have no confidence that we really thought out the ramifications.
