I think in some ways worse... that there even is an notion of American
exceptionalism is pretty myopic and narcissistic. We may have been able to do some things by virtue of our size and economic power but in my opinion not because we were any better. We got to the moon in the 60s because we were an economic power.... at a time when some people were forced to sit at the back of the bus and lynchings went unpunished. How great is that? At best we are exceptionally conflicted.
Even today, there are many people that cling to the idea that America is the greatest country on earth. It is a conditioned, reflexive statement By what measure I don't know. We don't have the happiest people, or the longest life expectancy, or the highest income. We score embarrassingly poorly on world wide tests of math, science and geography. I don't get the feeling that we are any less corrupt than anybody else. Exceptional? I don't think so.
