There is lots of "last mile" already in place, either optical or copper


there should be a way to force cable companies and Verizon to carry traffic, similar to the way phone companies had to carry each other's traffic 25 or 30 years ago. Cable/FIOS content can be proprietary but their infrastructure should be a public utility. The FCC says that 94% of the population already "has access to" high speed internet. (don't know if that means to their homes). That last 6% will get there. I really don't care if that last couple of % that want to live in the Alaska wilderness never get it.
