As an American, my main concern is with how our leaders respond.

We elect them to do their jobs, at least with a minimum of competence and effectiveness in terms of protecting American lives. By any measure, they have failed us.
I don't particularly care for statistics in this matter because it too easily obscures the human dimension that this failure has exacerbated. However, we are now leading the world in infections/population and as deaths continue to mount in the coming weeks deaths/population will look worse as well.
As for the French and the Italians, I don't know the extent to which their leaders ignored the threat or were simply unprepared due to resources, etc. At any rate, that is their affair, not ours. Lastly, If I was from of France or Italy, the proper adjectives would be colossale and grosso, respectively.
