Who or what killed Freddie Gray? The eyewitness said he was beat and tossed in the back of a police van. Cell phone video shows that he stepped up into the back of the van on his own power. The prosecutor then decided that Freddie Gray died because Police Officer Caesar Goodson gave him a “rough ride“. So they go to trial and no one can testify to the rough ride. In fact traffic camera and other video shows the van driving slowly through Baltimore with the officer even using his turn signals. All of the officers are found not guilty in State Court. The Justice Department investigates and brings no charges. So who or what killed Freddie Gray? The point of this is that there needs to be a balance between the public pressure to bring charges quickly, and completing an investigation so that you get it right the first time. I can imagine an image in Minneapolis where the prosecutor thought early on, this is going to be a straight-forward case. Everyone knows you can’t put your knee on a man’s neck and squeeze the life out of him. And then he talks to people in the Minneapolis Police Department who say, we do that all the time. Like 237 times in the last five years. With all that being said, I think Chauvin is guilty of some level of homicide, but it’s not going to be as easy of a case as it should have been.
