To see a Different and better federal role because some states (with fewer resources and lots of pressure from special interests) will likely screw things up worse.
As for what the different and better role looks like, I Admittedly don’t have a lot of specifics other than:
- Focus on raising the quality of teaching (recruiting, training, and methodologies)
- more experimentation in techniques and sharing of best practices across systems
One challenge with public schools that is often forgotten when interpreting the numbers is that they must take all comers with any kind of special need and must support those students in accordance with federal regs. So you can’t really compare their results with those of private schools that set their iwn rules and can select the pool they want.
