The analogy is weak.
McCarthy was a powerful US Congressman and committee chairman who could compel witnesses to come before his committee to be interrogated. He was the point man for what had the sanction of elected officialdom for a time.
It was the most serious attack on civil liberties rivaled only by what is going on now. The so called cancel culture doesn't compare really.
If you want a parallel of people being politically labeled in a similar fashion, it would be anti-war/civil rights protestors in the 1960s being called communists and/or anti-American. [Post edited by Chuck Taylor at 07/27/2020 07:51AM]
