Clarence Carter was the shit.
I remember when our football team went to camp pre-season of my 10th grade year (so, summer '68), the brothers were playing the hell out of his single "Slip Away" which I hadn't heard before...
I knew the Motown stuff from the radio (WPGC out of Prince Georges County) but from the southern soul and R&B genres I only knew Otis Redding and of course Booker T & the MGs, a little Sam & Dave.
But from the Black guys on the football team I got Clarence Carter and Sam Cooke and Lloyd Price, and James Carr's "Dark End of The Street." Thanks guys!
