I was expecting the linked article to be nutty, but I actually agree with
her. Of course, I wouldn't expect a statue of Queen Lili'uokalani in the capitol of the same country that supported a coup to overthrow her. Father Damien did indeed bravely shelter and treat lepers. But he was also part of a) an actual leper colony (on the island of Molokai) which is pretty barbaric, b) the European/American colonization of Hawaii with its attendant diseases which wiped out roughly 84% of Hawaiian natives between 1778-1840, and c) the chauvinism that Christian missionaries were needed to bring the Hawaiians out of savagery. Many of those missionaries stayed on to develop the sugar plantations on the islands. As the saying goes, "They came to do good and ended up doing right well."
So no, I'm not going to get agitated by AOC's statement.
