One of them, Valerie Jarrett, says she doesn’t care if its a black woman. Some of the others seem to have a beef with Whitmer largely over Flint’s issues. I saw Jim Clyburn claim he doesn’t care, and is more interested in a black woman as the next SCOTUS pick.

So, it’s politics. Far be it for me to tell you how to vote, but not sure I see why this one article with quotes from a few selected people would be the determining factor. Politics have always contained elements of identity, mixing with the concept of values. “Good Christian” has been a big deal for many years. They really mean Protestant - it was a big deal when Kennedy became the first Catholic president.

It’s partly about values. Some want a black woman because they want that cohort represented - the notion of a govt resembling it’s people. Just like people claim to worry about “good Christian values”, but many of them just want candidates who kinda look like them.

I don’t like identity politics on whole, but it isn’t new. I wish Joe said publicly that he’s picking the best person for the job, and can then select whoever he thinks best for his campaign - obviously including a black woman. But he had primaries to win so he had to play the political game.

It would be great if our country were color blind and never stereotyped on any basis. We clearly ain’t there. Playing politics with a VP pick is neither new nor particularly distressing to me. You knew they only wanted a woman for the job. The fact that a subset of people interviewed for this article said she has to be black as well is the deal breaker for you?
