It's been a long while since I lived in C'ville, but I do recall it being
one of the more segregated places I've ever encountered, despite being a liberal college town. There was clearly a "line" between the academic village parts of town and the predominantly African American neighborhoods and a good deal of mutual tension on both sides of the fence. Has that changed?
I also certainly don't see how progressive elites are immune to stereotyping or feeling "threatened" by groups of lower income minority kids. Especially when it was a fairly common occurrence for said minority kids to troll around the college scene and start trouble (happened all the time during my years in C'ville at least; maybe less frequent now).
